Title VIII — Support

Article 194

EO 209 · Family Code of the PhilippinesKey provision

ELI5— what this means for you

Support covers everything essential to keeping a person alive and living with dignity: food, clothing, shelter, medical attendance, education, and transportation in keeping with the financial capacity of the family. Education includes schooling and, during the educational years, everything needed to pursue a course of study. This is the broadest definition of support under Philippine law.

Key point

Support is not just food — it includes education, medical, clothing, shelter, and transportation. Cutting off any of these may constitute failure to provide support.

Official text — EO 209

Support compromises everything indispensable for sustenance, dwelling, clothing, medical attendance, education and transportation, in keeping with the financial capacity of the family.

The education of the person entitled to be supported referred to in the preceding paragraph shall include his schooling or training for some profession, trade or vocation, even beyond the age of majority. Transportation shall include expenses in going to and from school, or to and from place of work. (290a)
