02

Leading causes of death

Ischemic heart disease accounts for 21.3% of all deaths — the single largest cause. Non-communicable diseases (heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes) together account for over 50% of Philippine mortality.

PSA Causes of Death Statistics 2022

Under RA 11223 (Universal Health Care Act), all Filipinos are automatically members of PhilHealth — no application needed. All primary care services at public health centers are now free under UHC, including consultation, diagnostics, and essential medicines. Private hospitals must honor PhilHealth benefits without case rate advance payment.

03

PhilHealth coverage growth

PhilHealth coverage jumped from 78% in 2016 to 97.8% in 2023 — largely due to RA 11223 (Universal Health Care Act, 2019) which automatically enrolled all Filipinos. Coverage now reaches 117 million people.

04

Maternal mortality

Maternal mortality has declined from 221 per 100,000 live births in 2010 to 130 in 2022 — but remains high by regional standards. The Philippines still trails Thailand (37), Malaysia (24), and Singapore (9).

Under RA 10354 (Responsible Parenthood and Reproductive Health Act), all government health facilities must provide free maternal care services including prenatal check-ups, birthing kits, and postnatal care. Private hospitals in areas without government facilities are obligated to provide the same.

05

Hospital beds per 10,000 population (by region)

NCR has 28.4 hospital beds per 10,000 people — 15x more than BARMM at 1.9 beds. The WHO recommends a minimum of 10 per 10,000. Most Philippine regions fall below this threshold.
